History of 3013 Main

Since 1908, 3013 Main Street has been in the business of bringing relaxation to its patrons. Through the comfort of their furnishings, arts and linens, or knowing their investments are being carefully managed, 3013 Main is focused on letting you rest better at night.

According to the title work that traces land ownership back to 1833, this parcel changed ownership with little appurtenances until the early 1900's.

In the 1900s Kansas City was an exciting place... Kansas City had 150,000 people in it. There were electric streetcars, almost as many automobiles as horse-drawn vehicles, trolley wires and telephone wires and power wires everywhere. All of the main streets were paved and more of the side streets were being paved each year; the park system was already famous worldwide and still not finished. The public library had (unbelievable!) nearly half a million volumes.  --"To Sail Beyond the Sunset" by Robert A. Heinlein

Neighbor and former owner of 3013 Main, Bob Marshall of Kansas City Stationary, traced the history of the building back to 1923 and the father of a close personal friend who owned Kansas City Bedding Company. The success of the mattress company, which specialized in kid's mattresses and beds, can be attributed to St. Mary's Hospital across the street, which is the grounds of the future Federal Reserve Complex, to be completed in 2007. Bob Marshall purchased the building in 1980 to showcase his furniture and updated the exterior with a San Francisco-style look featured in the Kansas City Star.

A local artist, Martha Clay Wood McDermitt, purchased 3013 Main from Marshall in the mid ‘80s to exhibit local artists. McDermitt owned Union Hill Arts and proudly displayed a wide array of artists' work with an attitude of ‘You bring them in, and I'll let you show them.' Union Hill Arts shouldered ups and downs as it hosted beautiful artwork and then received a bolt of lightening that crumbled the roof. The building took on another facelift that included a new angular roof and interior walls. McDermitt's life was cut short with leukemia and the building was sold to Pat Flynn who brought back the furniture. Flynn made excellent use of the large display windows to display his trendy office furnishings and similar to the other owners ahead of him, added his own enhancements by extending the back offices.

Today, Buttonwood has embraced the rich history of this building and has committed to maintain the beauty and spirit of revitalization that has been endorsed by its preceding owners. From the exterior, the building is inviting with warm colors and charm and the front display windows host work from regional artists. As you walk in, the natural lighting shines elegantly throughout the open building and highlights accent features such as tin ceilings and crown molding. The color palate includes warm natural tones that accent built-in White Birch bookcases and wood trim. To be in 3013 Main is like being in a safe, comfortable environment with people who are as inviting as their atmosphere.
